Q1. Wei Ming has $80. He spends 1/2. Then gives 1/4 of remainder to Mei Ling. How much left?
โ Half of $80 is $40. Remainder is $40. One quarter of $40 is $10. Left is $40 minus $10 equals $30.
Q2. What is the first step in finding a fraction of a remainder?
โ You must calculate the remaining amount after the first transaction before applying the next fraction.
Q3. Siti has $60. She spends 1/3. Then gives 1/2 of remainder to Ravi. How much does Ravi get?
โ One third of $60 is $20. Remainder is $40. Half of $40 is $20. Ravi receives $20.

[Slide 1] Understanding Remainders in Fractions
Welcome back, class. Today we solve problems where we find a fraction of what remains after spending some money. Imagine Wei Ming at Tampines hawker centre buying lunch.
[Slide 2] The Bar Model Method
We use the model method to visualise the steps. First, draw a bar representing the total money Wei Ming has. Then, shade the part he spends on food.
[Slide 3] Step One: First Spending
Wei Ming has $100. He spends one quarter at the hawker centre. So, we divide one hundred by four to find the cost per unit.
[Slide 4] Step Two: Fraction of Remainder
Now, he gives one third of the remainder to Siti. Remember, we only divide the remaining seventy-five dollars by three. This ensures accurate calculation for the second step.
[Slide 5] Avoiding Common Errors
A common mistake is dividing the original hundred dollars by three. You must always use the remainder amount as your new total. Be careful with this during exams.
[Slide 6] Lesson Recap
To recap, find the first part, calculate the remainder, then apply the next fraction. Keep practising these steps for your PSLE exam. Good luck with your revision.
